This festival highlights and explores the lotus plant's enduring influence on Asian cultures over the centuries.
The Annual Water Lily and Lotus Asian Cultures Festival is sponsored by the Modern Buddism of America. In Buddism, lotus flowers symbolize mental and spiritual purity.

An estimated half a million people overcame the elements and gathered in Washington D.C. to celebrate the 230th anniversary of America's independence. Pyro Shows, Incorporated of LaFollete, Tenn. was contracted by the National Park service to launch 33 tons of fireworks above the Washington Monument. The 20 minute show went on without a hitch. Spectators were dazzled by a myriad of spectacular fireworks effects that painted the sky, red, white, and blue. Cheers and applauses went on long after the show.
National Independence Day Parade
Thousands of spectators from accross the globe came to view the National Independence Day parade held on Constitution Avenue from 7th to 17th Street. The Parade consisted of invited bands, military and specialty units, floats, and VIP's. The National Independence Day Parade is a patriotic, flag waving, red white and blue celebration of America's birthday.
40th Annual Smithsonian Folklife Festival
The Smithsonian's Folklife Festival kicks off on the National Mall Friday for its 40th year.
This year's evening concert series is titled "Been in the Storm So Long," and features African American musical traditions from the region devastated last year by Hurricane Katrina.
With more than ten miles of broad Atlantic beach, vacationing in Ocean City, Maryland has endless diversions that appeal to all: sand, waves, people watching, snoozing, beach combing, and more! National Museum of the American Indian Grand Opening
Established in 1989, through an Act of Congress, the Smithsonian's National Museum of the American Indian opened its doors to the public on September 21, 2004. As part of the grand opening, a spectacular six-day First Americans Festival was held on the National Mall. The flags, feathers, and bright native clothing made for a multicolored display, and the air was filled with the smell of burned sage and the sounds of drums, bells and music.

The gift of flowers honors the beauty and the brevity of life and evoke memories of other days. President Bush paid tribute at a Memorial Day ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery to members of America's military who died in combat. The President placed a beautiful red, white, and blue wreath in front of the tomb of unknowns.
In this place where valor sleeps, we acknowledge our responsibility as Americans to preserve the memory of the fallen. On this Memorial Day, we look out on quiet hills, and rows of white headstones -- and we know that we are in the presence of greatness. The markers here record the names of more than 296,000 men and women. US veterans marched at the Memorial Day parade held in Washington DC. Thousands of US veterans and citizens participated the parade to commemorate the Memorial Day which came on the last Monday of each May. The nine-block march along Independence Avenue featured bands, floats, vintage automobiles and vintage servicemen.
"I am delighted that our committee is able to bring that great tradition back to the nation's capital as we give a much-deserved salute to all those who fought and died for our country over the past two centuries and more," said James C. Roberts, chair of the committee and president of the World War II Veterans Committee.
The veteran organization "Rolling Thunder" rode into Washington aloft their custom motorcycles for three days of events honoring their fellow veterans and strengthening ties with President George W. Bush, their choice for November's election. The organization took its name from Operation Rolling Thunder the United States' extensive bombing campaign during the Vietnam War. "When you ride a whole bunch of Harleys together with straight pipes, it sounds like a B-52 carpet bombing," said Mr. Muller, who earned the Combat Infantry Badge serving in the Army's 4th Infantry Division during the Vietnam War.
